Depression - Caused by Twisted Thinking

If you are feeling depressed, it could be the result of "twisted thinking". There are many different twisted schools of thought, but here I want to talk about two, overgeneralisation and this is mental filter. If might catch yourself making the next errors, you can use secrets to overcome and dramatically grow your depression.

The first gaffe, overgeneralisation is when you're making the assumption that if something happens once, it will may come for ever after.

You obtain a job and don't that. Overgeneralisation makes you conclude "I'll never get any job. It's completely hopeless". Overgeneralisation multiplies that the pain of setbacks or rejections several times. You could think about a setback as just regarding isolated event, but instead you interpret it a message from society that all your function are doomed.

Overgeneralistion can happen even although all the evidence. David Burns, in his book Confirmed, tells about the troubled salesman who noticed bird dung in car window and thought "That's just my luck. The birds are for all times crapping on my computer! ". When asked he could not think of another time in the last twenty years when had been happened. By becoming aware of if you are overgeneralising, and challenging it (for instance by asking if its true that something "always" or "never" happens) begin to overcome it.

The other form of the twisted thinking that I have to discuss here is the mental filter. This happens when you focus all of your attention on a small amount of negative elements, giving them importance in all the proportion. For instance, if a student takes a test with 100 questions and gets ten individuals wrong, the mental filter produces him obsess about these kinds of ten errors, ignoring how the he in fact scratched 90%, an excellent justin. As another example, I might see thirty patients to some week and have one session that didn't go well, which somebody else did not think came across as helpful. The mental filter produces me concentrate on on it, ignoring the fact that all those the other sessions that week, and most of each sessions with that patient various other weeks, did in fact match. This sort of behaviour proceeds from depression. When we are depressed our company only respond to demoralizing information, and that negative information causes us to be more depressed. We can how you can recognise when the mental filter is operating and the way to defeat it, saving my own self much needless suffering.
